Tom didn’t leave the cemetery room for the rest of the day. Reg brought him a couple firebowls and part of an old towel for a pillow. Tom sat, stared at the carved tombstone, and spun his father’s ring on his thumb. Before he slept, he stood up and carried the flame farther down the room, looking at the wall. There was another carved tombstone but no burial mound. It matched his father’s, but the name on it was REGINALD ULYSSES FISHER, and below it was the smaller epitaph WILL GROW IN SUNLIGHT.

Eventually, Tom wadded the sour-smelling towel beneath his head and watched the firebowls burn down. Long after the willow wood and trash had become ash, the flames still licked around the stone bowl. Everything had been soaked in crawdad oil.
